Job Description — Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Governance Note: If the individual serving as CFO also holds the Treasurer (Board) position, all Treasurer duties are unpaid governance responsibilities. Any operational compensation applies only to CFO services and follows conflict-of-interest and recusal procedures.

Role Purpose

The Chief Financial Officer ensures the financial integrity, transparency, and sustainability of The Art of Drinking Water Foundation by maintaining clear records, supporting budgeting and reserves planning, and providing calm financial insight to leadership and the board.

Reports To

Board Chair / President (strategy alignment) and Board Treasurer (governance coordination).

Time Commitment

Light but consistent monthly engagement, with increased activity during budget reviews, grant reporting, or audits.

Term

At-will / renewable as determined by the Board, aligned to financial complexity and needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate financial records and monthly summaries
  • Track income and expenses (restricted vs. unrestricted)
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and operating reserve planning
  • Prepare clear finance snapshots for board review
  • Support grant financial reporting and compliance readiness
  • Alert leadership to financial risks or concerns early

Deliverables

  • Monthly: Finance Snapshot (cash, reserves, income, expenses)
  • Quarterly: Budget vs. actual summary and reserve status
  • As needed: Grant finance documentation and audit support

Success Measures

  • Financial records are accurate, current, and easy to interpret
  • Board has clear visibility into financial health
  • Operating reserves are tracked and protected
  • Financial compliance requirements are anticipated, not reactive

Qualifications

  • Comfort with basic nonprofit financial reporting
  • Strong attention to detail and consistency
  • Ability to explain financial information clearly
  • Finance, accounting, or budgeting experience preferred (not required)

This role values clarity, steadiness, and transparency. The CFO helps the Foundation stay financially grounded so the mission can grow responsibly.
