When Authority Has No Awareness

There is a particular kind of confusion that comes from watching people in the highest seats have the least understanding of what actually holds the work together.
They speak in strategy.
In vision.
In polished language meant to sound decisive.
And yet, they are disconnected—from the day-to-day, from the people doing the work, from the consequences of their decisions.
People call this leadership.
But what it often feels like is abandonment.
C-suite authority without awareness doesn’t usually look reckless.
It looks confident.
Confident enough not to listen.
Confident enough to assume alignment without checking.
Confident enough to believe proximity to power equals proximity to truth.
They rely on dashboards instead of dialogue.
Summaries instead of stories.
Assumptions instead of presence.
And when things go wrong, they’re surprised.
They ask how no one told them.
Why the culture feels brittle.
Why trust has thinned.
But people did tell them.
They just didn’t listen in ways that required slowing down or changing course.
The harm isn’t always malicious.
Often, it’s structural.
Layers of insulation protect those at the top from the impact of their choices.
Feedback is filtered.
Discomfort is softened.
Reality is curated.
Over time, leaders stop sensing the gravity of what they carry.
They make decisions that look clean on paper
and land heavily in bodies.
Workloads increase without acknowledgment.
Policies shift without context.
Values are named without being practiced.
The people closest to the ground absorb the weight.
I’ve watched entire teams contort themselves to make leadership’s blind spots survivable.
Managers translate directives into something workable.
Staff protect one another from whiplash.
And the people at the top remain unaware—
not because the truth wasn’t present,
but because it never reached them intact.
Water taught me something here.
Water always reveals gravity.
When pressure is applied from above,
the effects show up below.
You see it in burnout.
In turnover.
In silence where there used to be engagement.
C-suite leaders without awareness often mistake compliance for buy-in.
Silence for agreement.
Distance for efficiency.
But disconnection is not neutrality.
It is a choice—with consequences.
Leadership is not defined by altitude.
It’s defined by attentiveness.
By the willingness to be informed by those closest to the work.
By the courage to hear what disrupts your narrative.
By the humility to recognize that titles do not equal understanding.
When executives are unwilling to listen, organizations don’t fail loudly.
They leak.
Morale leaks.
Trust leaks.
Integrity leaks.
Until what remains is structure without soul.
If you are someone working under leaders who seem out of touch, know this:
Your frustration is not immaturity.
Your exhaustion is not resistance.
Your clarity is not insubordination.
It is awareness.
And awareness, when honored, is what keeps systems alive.
If you are someone in power, hear this gently:
Gravity is already at work.
You don’t need more control.
You need proximity.
Because water will always show you where weight is being felt.
The question is whether you’re willing to look—
before the damage becomes visible in ways that can no longer be ignored.
Leadership without awareness does not hold.
It presses down.
And eventually, everything beneath it tells the truth.
